Asphalt Repair
The most common type of damage that will occur to an asphalt paved road is know as “alligator” or “crocodile” cracking. This type of damage occurs when the road is not able to support the weight placed on it. These cracks have a very distinctive pattern to them and once they form it can be very hard to reverse the damages and fix the road because every vehicle that drives over it will continue to damage it further. There are a few temporary solutions available to try and slow down the expansion of the cracks, such as crack filler or coatings you can apply to the affected area to seal it from the elements. The only way to truly fix this type of problem is to dig down beneath the road and identify the underlying problem, which is usually when the supportive structure has eroded. Fixing the source of the cracking will be sure to prevent more damage from occurring but it should be done by trained professionals. These types of problems are typical in the north because the constant freezing and thawing weakens the underlying structures. If the foundation of the road is not properly installed then the alligator and crocodile cracking may take place.
